Helping manage the pain of Osteoarthritis
Viscosupplementation
Viscosupplementation is a procedure that involves the injection of hyaluronates into a joint to supplement the viscous properties of synovial fluid, thereby improving mobility, decreasing pain, and restoring the natural protective functions of hyaluronan in the joint. Depending on the preparation, hyaluronan is typically administered in a series of 3 weekly intra-articular injections.
Viscosupplementation has been widely used in Canada since the early 1990’s and injected into many arthritic joints. It has been shown to be beneficial in osteoarthritis (OA) for the management of pain and improvement in the physical function of joints. It is best suited for patients with mild to moderate OA where no relief has been obtained with Cortisone or other therapeutic options. They are classed by Health Canada as medical devices rather than drugs because their primary action is mechanical rather than pharmacological.
The active ingredient in viscosupplements is Sodium Hyaluronate which is a normal component of synovial fluid. When injected, it provides viscoelasticity (lubrication) and resilience (cushioning effect) to the joint.
The injections are intra-articular and approximately 75% of patients experience pain relief with minimal side effects. The incidence of local reactions are typically 1-2% and transient pain at the injection site is the most common reaction. The beneficial effects of treatment usually last 6-9months.
The viscosupplementation product we use at the Sports & Spinal Injury Clinic is Suplasyn.
